“A noble pursuit that showcases the range of the mighty double bass well” BBC Music April 2019

David was appointed Principal Double Bass with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at the age of 25. Since joining he has performed under four principal conductors before the current highly acclaimed incumbent Kirill Karabits.

“the rich, dark ‘Russian’ sound and nimble virtuosity he gets from the band are vivid successes of his time in Bournemouth.” Sunday Times

With the orchestra David has toured the UK, Europe, America and as far as Hong Kong performing in the world’s finest concert halls such as Carnegie Hall – New York, and the Musikverein – Vienna and at the BBC Proms.

Many of the BSO main season concerts are broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The final concert in the 15/16 season which was broadcast live, featured Mahler’s First symphony. The third movement of this symphony opens with a very special Double Bass solo. Here is David performing it at this concert;

David has appeared on over 100 of BSO recordings (The BSO is one of the most recorded orchestras in Britain) including a number of which have won the coveted ‘Grammy’ and ‘Gramaphone’ awards. Highlights are many and have included the recent Prokofiev Symphonic cycle with Kirill Karabits,

"This is a crowning culmination to a highly collectable set” The Telegraph ★★★★★

and a recording the Britten and Shostakovich Violin Concerto’s with the wonderful James Ehnes.

The recording with Nicola Benedetti, The Silver Violin was the best-selling classical album of 2012 and the recent recording of the Shostakovich and Glazunov Violin Concertos also received high praise.

“Another big plus is the playing of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Kirill Karabits, a sound that broods and simmers in the Shostakovich and adds lustrous depth to the Glazunov.” ★★★ The Guardian

David has appeared a number of times as soloist with the BSO to high acclaim, performing Bottesini’s Concerto no.2 in the orchestra’s main season series and Bottesini’s Duo Concertant with Jonathan Carney. David has also played as guest Principal Double Bass with other British and Irish orchestras including the London Philharmonic, the BBC symphony, the Royal Philharmonic and RTE NSOI.
